Story

NAME Emma Smith

OCCUPATION Teacher

GROUP NAME  Summit Soul Shakers

I moved to Jindabyne in 2008, relocating from Sydney after doing a winter season here. I fell in love with the community and people here and just couldn't leave. I have two amazing children, Kaden (12) and Scarlett (9) who keep me busy.

I am currently the Assistant Head of Middle and Senior School at Snowy Mountains Grammar School. This is my 10th year teaching at the school, and as well as my above role, I am also the Careers Advisor and teach PDHPE.

I love spending time with my family and friends, both here in Jindabyne and also back in Sydney where I grew up.

I am so excited (and nervous) to be a part of this amazing opportunity to raise vital funds for a cause so close to my heart.

Like lots of people, Cancer has had a direct impact on my life. I lost my nan when I was 9 years old to Cancer, and she was such an important part in my life. I still have the letter she wrote to me before she passed, saying “Remember I will always be a bright star shining over you every night”. Last year my mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer, which with the advancements in early detection and surgery available these days she has had surgery and is now cancer free. I have colleagues, friends and parents at my school who have also been through or are still on the Cancer journey.

A key program at our school focuses on service learning, and I believe that if we are asking our students to give back to the community in different ways, then I need to walk the walk and be a role model by doing this. I always encourage the students to be brave, courageous and step out of their comfort zone and so I am now giving myself that advice.

So, I am participating in Hot City Disco for my Nanny, my Mum and all the other people in my life who have been impacted by Cancer in some way, either directly or indirectly, as well as be a role model to all my students.

I would be so grateful if you would be able to donate to help me raise funds for this great cause!

Love Emma ❤️  🪩 💃

Monaro Committee for Cancer Research Incorporated

The Monaro Committee for Cancer Research was formed in 1996 by the daughter of a young Monaro mother who after a 5 year struggle lost her battle with cancer. Since its inception the mcCr has supported cancer outreach services on Snowy Monaro. In 2007 after much lobbying, a local oncology service was introduced to the Cooma Hospital. Local support raised in excess of $100,000 towards this project and today we have a successful outreach oncology service. mcCr is a local voluntary group of dedicated women working towards further cancer support and services for the Snowy Monaro Region.Your support will enable mcCr to continue this assistance for cancer sufferers.
