Joe Bobbin
Joe Bobbin
Story
Name: Joe Bobbin
Occupation: Farmer/Tradie
Team name: Mirror Ball Mavericks
I was raised on and still call home ,a farm between Bombala and Nimmitabel.
I grew up a son of a drover and a shearer’s cook. I spent a large amount of time droving the roads and in shearing sheds around the Monaro.
I attended primary school in Ando . Where at one stage I was 1 of only 7 kids.
High school took me to Bombala ,where I wasn’t the most academic student. I loved my sport and as it turned out I wasn’t too shabby at rugby league.
I set my sights on trying to make it in the big league. I made the move to Canberra and started in the Raiders SG ball and Toyota cup. Unfortunately after a string of injuries my dreams of being a professional footy player were dashed.
However, I managed make the most of my skills, playing all over Australia and overseas: Fiji, New Zealand, France, England and my favourite America.
After my stint in the States, home was calling so I bought into the family farm.
I still had a passion for footy. The Bombala community hadn’t had a senior club in over 11 years. I was honoured to captain coach the first grade side for the following three years and am still involved with the team some nine years later.
I still and will forever call the Monaro home . I’m so proud of our community and to be a part of it.
I love to be involved with community and help in anyway I can. I’m a huge fan of all the work and money raised for cancer research. And have for a long time wanted to be involved with this event.
My mother is a breast cancer survivor. I believe that this cause and all like it ,will continue to help find better treatments and hopefully cures in the future.
It also helps that I love to cut a shape on the dance floor.
Monaro Committee for Cancer Research Incorporated
The Monaro Committee for Cancer Research was formed in 1996 by the daughter of a young Monaro mother who after a 5 year struggle lost her battle with cancer. Since its inception the mcCr has supported cancer outreach services on Snowy Monaro. In 2007 after much lobbying, a local oncology service was introduced to the Cooma Hospital. Local support raised in excess of $100,000 towards this project and today we have a successful outreach oncology service. mcCr is a local voluntary group of dedicated women working towards further cancer support and services for the Snowy Monaro Region.Your support will enable mcCr to continue this assistance for cancer sufferers.
