Story

NAME  Lucy Murdoch

OCCUPATION  Teacher/Kindergarten Wrangler

GROUP NAME  Mirror Ball Mavericks

Born and bred in Ando, I am perceived as a country girl, however, I am yet to lend a helping hand since returning to live on the family farm over 2 years ago. My strengths lie in the kitchen and in the classroom where I whip up magnificent meals and whip children into shape (figuratively).

After I finished school, I ventured up to the big smoke of Sydney where I learnt that people don’t say hello down the street, and you have to press a button to get off at the right bus stop. However, after almost 10 hustling and bustling years and a pandemic, it was time to come home.

I am now living back in Ando with a very competitive and very lucky Englishman who looks mysteriously like Prince Harry and two equally lucky pooches. I too am very lucky to be part of a fantastic team at St Joey’s in Bombala where I am currently wrangling kindergarten and having a blast.

Sadly, I was born on the wrong side of the Decade of Disco, however I highly doubt that Disco Fever ever left Ando, considering the percentage of Mavericks that reside here. I grew up alongside two sisters and spent my childhood reluctantly helping Dad on the farm and making up dances in the loungeroom before insisting my parents sit and endure every minute of our mediocre matinees...now I have a real paying audience!

My mum, Jill Murdoch, has been a mcCr Star on multiple occasions and now I’m feeling the pressure to dance in her footsteps after some amazing performances. After 20 years working in Community Health in Cooma, Mum saw first-hand how cancer effected our community and how mcCr supported local families navigate their way through the medical system and their treatments.

To have the opportunity to show off my moves outside of Mum and Dad’s loungeroom, be part of a truly outstanding team AND raise money for an organisation that is committed to supporting our community is a real honour and I simply can’t wait to get started.

Monaro Committee for Cancer Research Incorporated

The Monaro Committee for Cancer Research was formed in 1996 by the daughter of a young Monaro mother who after a 5 year struggle lost her battle with cancer. Since its inception the mcCr has supported cancer outreach services on Snowy Monaro. In 2007 after much lobbying, a local oncology service was introduced to the Cooma Hospital. Local support raised in excess of $100,000 towards this project and today we have a successful outreach oncology service. mcCr is a local voluntary group of dedicated women working towards further cancer support and services for the Snowy Monaro Region.Your support will enable mcCr to continue this assistance for cancer sufferers.
